Summer Activities for Gundogs to get Shoot Season Ready!

As a passionate dog owner, I am not a professional dog trainer or expert, but I wanted to share some summer activities for gundogs. These are activities I do with my dogs to prepare them for the upcoming shoot season. Here’s how I ensure my gang is ready to go when the season starts:

1. Enjoying Off-Season Adventures

During the off-season, I love taking my dogs out on fun and new walks with friends. These outings help them stretch their legs, burn off some steam, and maintain high levels of socialization. Exploring different environments keeps them engaged and happy, making our bond even stronger.

2. Keeping Up with Lead and Heel Work

One of the first skills that tends to slip with my dogs is lead and heel work. To prevent this, I make sure to practice regularly. Consistency is key, so I incorporate short training sessions into our daily walks, ensuring they remain sharp and responsive on the lead.

3. Steadiness Training

Steadiness is crucial for shooting season, so I make it a priority throughout the summer. I sit my dogs in various locations and throw Avonmeadow dummies around them repeatedly. This consistent practice helps them become rock-solid in their steadiness. Check out our latest Instagram post featuring our very own home-bred labrador’s Lulu in action last season to see the results of this training. If Lulu doesn’t prove to you it is worth it, we don’t know what will!

4. Keeping It Fun

Fun is an essential part of our training routine. I always ensure my dogs are having a blast by playing games with Avonmeadow training treats and dummies. These non-structured, enjoyable drills not only reinforce basic elements of a retrieve, like delivery, but also help build and maintain a strong bond between us.

I find that the key to a successful summer preparing for the shoot season is making sure your dogs are happy and enjoying their off season. With these activities, you can get your dog’s ready while keeping the fun and excitement alive! For more inspiration and helpful training aids, feel free to explore our website.
