As we gear up for another exciting shoot season, it’s essential to ensure that you—and more importantly, your dogs—are fully prepared. Over the years, I’ve developed a checklist of essentials that I never head out without. Here are my top tips and the products I rely on to get shoot season ready:

1. The Most Important: A First Aid Kit

If there's one thing on this list that you absolutely need, it’s a reliable first aid kit. You never know when you might need it, and I always believe it's better to have it and not need it than the other way around. I highly recommend the Dog First Aid Kits from The Dog First Aid Co. They’re packed with everything you might need for an emergency when out in the field. Trust me, this is a must-have! If you take one thing away from this blog is to get yourself a first aid kit - order yours here now!

2. New Bedding for the Truck

While it might seem over the top, I ensure my dogs have fresh bedding every day they’re out. This practice prevents any bugs or nasties from festering and multiplying on the bedding between outings. I switch between vet bedding and paper bedding depending on the weather. Vet bedding is perfect for warmer days, while paper bedding excels in keeping the team warm, clean, and dry as the season progresses and the mud arrives. Check out our range of bedding here.

3. Dog Coats and Jumpers

One thing I never overlook is post-work care. Before the season begins, I ensure all dog coats and jumpers are washed, in good condition, and still fit the dogs comfortably. This practice is crucial to prevent injuries and stiffness after a long day in the field. As soon as the work is done, my team is straight into their jumpers to stay warm and cosy. This is your reminder to check your dog jumpers and coats and order new ones if needed your dogs will thank you!

4. Get Your Equipment Ready

I make sure my truck is fully stocked with all the essentials before heading out. This includes checking that I have enough leads for the entire team—leads seem to have a habit of disappearing over the summer! I also keep a few training dummies on hand, just in case an opportunity for a quick training session arises out in the field. Treat your team to a new set of leads.

5. Lastly To Get Shoot Season Ready Ensure Your Dogs Are in Top Condition

Finally, it’s vital to ensure your dogs are fit and in peak condition. The right nutrition is key. My pack thrives on Avonmeadow Chicken & Sweet Potato with a daily dose of PureFlax oil. For dogs that struggle to maintain their weight, like my Labrador Harry, I add some fat cubes to their diet to keep them in perfect shape throughout the season. Why not take a look at our dog food and supplements here.

These are my tried-and-true tips for a successful shoot season. As you prepare, be sure to visit our website for inspiration and all the products you might need. It’s all about making sure your dogs are ready, happy, and healthy for the adventures ahead!
